Musicals are known to be emotional. The best musicals tend to have at least one sad song. I think sad songs give a show strength and creates conflict. These shows tend to be the most real and also are some of the most beautiful and memorable songs ever. Here is a list of some sad musical songs. This list does not include reprises or any song that only has a small portion of sad in it.
- Santa Fe (Newsies)
- I’m Not That Girl
- On My Own
- A Little Fall of Rain
- Drink With Me
- I Dreamed a Dream
- Empty Chairs at Empty Chairs
- Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again
- Will I
- Without You
- Your Eyes
- One Song Glory
- This Nearly Was Mine
I am going to dedicate this post to Phantom of the Opera.
I am a Phantom of the Opera fan. I first listened to the some of the songs in 2013. I automatically fell in love with them. I knew that I had to eventually see the stage show. I finally got to fulfill that in 2014. I went with my mom and we had orchestra seats. I remember when I first saw the famous chandelier, I could not take my eyes off of it. I watched most of the overture by looking at it. I did not even move at all until that chandelier fell and that was the best part of the show.
This sounds crazy, but I don’t see Phantom as the main character. I really see Christine as the main character, which is why I don’t see Phantom of the Opera as a heartbreaking musical. In my opinion, it is trapped in between happy and sad musicals. The story is basically a love triangle. It seems to focus on the relationship between Christine and Raoul a lot more then Phantom and Christine. I feel bad for the Phantom due to the unrequited love and how people have been treating him.
When I first saw the musical, it ended up being hauntingly beautiful and spellbinding. You get caught under the Phantom’s spell and the show left me choked up by the beautiful music. Mom told me I was spellbound from start to finish. My favorite song from Phantom is “Music of the Night”. Maybe some day I will be able to see the Broadway production.
This is a list of musical duets, which are not about romantic love. It seems as if most musical duets are about that. But when a duet is not about romantic love, there is something special. It allows duets to have a wider variety of topics.
- For Good
- A Little Fall of Rain
- Phantom of the Opera
- What You Own
- Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better
- Come to Me
These duets make you realize musical duets do not always have to be about romantic love. Out of all these, I can relate to “For Good” the most because it is about friendship and I understand what it is like to have a friend and how they can change you. I find the song very special because it brings together what the main message in “Wicked”. The whole story is basically the relationship between Glinda and Elphaba, which starts out with them being very reluctant roommates in college, but it soon turns into this beautiful friendship.
