All Love Triangles

Major Spoilers:

Jud x Laurey x Curly- I believe this is one of the weak love triangles. It is only easy to tell that Laurey and Curly are in it. So Oklahoma does make it difficult to know there is even a love triangle in the main romance to begin with.

Ali Hakim x Ado Annie x Will Parker – Oklahoma has a 2nd love triangle, which is not as serious as the main one, but is still weak. Just like the first one, you can only pick up on Ado Annie and Will being in it.

Gaston x Belle x Beast- Now, things are much stronger. I never thought about Beauty and the Beast having a love triangle. I just thought it was only a romance between Belle and Beast.

Ellen x Chris x Kim- Now, we defiantly know there is a love triangle. When I first saw Miss Saigon, which was in Feb., I didn’t want Ellen in the picture. I didn’t want Kim and Chris’s relationship to become tragic- it all had to do with my actor and actress. At the end of the musical, I could tell that Chris always loved Kim- even more than Ellen. His reaction to Kim’s death told me that- that cry was heartbreaking.

Phantom x Christine x Raoul- I am one of those Christine and Raoul fans. I do feel for all three of the characters. However, I do not like how Phantom responds to his unrequited love- he does not accept or cope with it. Christine and Raoul are meant to be with other.

Eponine x Marius x Cosette- I also love this love triangle. I love Marius and Cosette. They are so adorable together and help bring hope to the tragedy. Cosette represents hope and light- so it makes sense why she ends up with Marius. These two are my favorite survivors= in particular Marius. Cosette and Eponine are mirrors= Cosette goes from bad to good and Eponine goes from good to bad.

Eponine is my favorite character in the love triangle. I love her strength, bravery, and loyalty to Marius. She may be a Thenardier, but she still has some kind of goodness inside of her. She risks her life several times all because of the deep and strong love for Marius. It may be unrequited, but he is all she has. He is the only person who has shown her kindness. He is the only good thing in her life. Even though she dies at the end, I love how Marius is there.

Look, some people will say the love triangle is silly, some people say Marius should have ended up with Eponine, and some say that Marius is a jerk- I disagree on all of that. Les Mis is so carefully planned out that if you get rid of ONE thing, the entire story falls apart. That is why it is not silly and that is why Marius needed to end up with Cosette. Marius is not a jerk- I have seen him as a brave, compassionate, sweet, kind, and awkward young man. If he wasn’t brave, he wouldn’t have been a revolutionary and gone to fight at the barricade. If he wasn’t kind, Eponine NEVER would have fallen in love with him. If he wasn’t compassionate, he never would have made the decision to stay with Eponine during her death scene=yes, he was devastated, but he stayed with her- that is compassion.

Glinda x Fiyero x Elphaba- Why do you think I put them last? They are my favorite love triangle. This love triangle is the one I emotionally bonded with first, and where I first discovered the concept. It also is the most complex one I discovered. All three characters are complex- yes, all three of complex even though some would say only Glinda and Elphaba are complex. Fiyero is complex as well- his development and his role in the love triangle are why he is a complex character. Unrequited love: well, both Elphaba and Glinda end up with in this love triangle, and they respond by not stealing him away from their best friend. So, the love triangle shows they will not let a boy get in the way of their friendship.

What are other musical theatre love triangles you can think of?

My favorite couples and pairings

I have talked a number of times on my blog about romance in musicals. I thought to do something a bit differently. What if I brought up a few couples in musicals and my favorite pairing I have seen? That shall be interesting.

Major Spoilers:

Nala and Simba: Nia Holloway and Jared Dixon

  • Love her Nala and his Simba. Wonderful pairing.

Katherine and Jack Kelly: Kaitlyn Frank and Joey Barreiro

  • While I only remember Joey Barreiro’s portrayal, I said they are my favorite pairing. I just can’t help but think about Joey. That is why I said these two are my favorite pairing- all because of Joey.
Joey Barreiro as Jack Kelly in the stage show of Newsies

Jasmine and Aladdin: Naomi Scott and Mena Massoud

  • Yes, my favorite pairing is from the live action Aladdin movie. That could soon change: if I see Aladdin in person in September.

Belle and Beast: Emma Watson and Dan Stevens

  • So, I have two favorite Disney pairings from live action Disney movies.
Dan Stevens as Beast and Emma Watson as Belle in Beauty and the Beast live action

Kim and Chris: Emily Bautista and Anthony Festa

  • Well, they are the only Kim and Chris I saw.
Anthony Festa as Chris and Emily Bautista as Kim in The Last Night of the World

Christine and Raoul: Grace Morgan and Ben Jacoby

  • I may not remember anything about their Christine and Raoul. However, they currently are my favorite Christine and Raoul. I still remember my reaction during Phantom of the Opera: spellbound and choked up. That does say something. I remember getting attached to Christine in May of 2014.

Cosette and Marius: Jillian Butler and Joshua Grosso

  • I don’t really need to explain the two of them (I have said I believe, a lot about Joshua’s Marius). The reason why I remember Jillian’s Cosette so well is because of Joshua’s Marius. They are such an adorable couple- which I can’t explain.

Elphaba and Fiyero: Mary Kate Morrissey and Ashley Parker Angel

  • Of four casts, they are the only Elphaba and Fiyero I remember. It is crazy how just saying that Elphaba and Fiyero are a couple is a spoiler in itself.

Unpopular Opinions in Musicals (Part 2)

I know I did an unpopular opinion on musicals before, but I decided to do it again.

Major and Minor Spoilers:

No Hamilton Interest- many know I am a musical theatre fanatic. However, I have no interest in seeing Hamilton. I am listened to some songs on Youtube, but I have felt “meh” on them. If that happens, I never want to see the musical. So no way I want to see Hamilton. Many people respond by saying “but your’e a musical fan.

Christine and Raoul- I love Christine and Raoul as a couple. I do not want it any other way. They are meant for each other. Phantom is too dangerous for Christine- he acts in revenge, is a murderer, and is destructive. So I am always a Christine and Raoul couple fan.

Les Mis love triangle is not silly- You saw that right. The Les Mis plot line is so carefully planned that if you get rid of one plot line, the entire storyline falls apart. I love all three characters- with Eponine being my favorite character in the love triangle. Marius now is almost a core favorite character. Marius and Cosette are meant to be together and Eponine is meant to have the unrequited love especially because Cosette represents hope and light. After all, I am fascinated by the switch that happens between Eponine and Cosette.

Love Marius and Eponine as friends- Yes, their friendship is NOT in the book. I love how it is in the musical. Marius never mistreats Eponine, and she always sees the kindness in him. His kindness moves her to fall in love with him. He is the only person to treat her with kindness- it is all she has in life. People think he did not treat her fairly- I disagree- he did treat her fairly. I know it seems that way when he asked her to do those errands for him. Look, at the barricade- I believe he sent her away with the letter to keep her safe from being hurt or worse KILLED. When he discovered she is dying- he stayed with her and held and comforted her- that is COMPASSION. I love them as friends- he never treated her unfairly. Without Marius in her life, she would not have any light- she needed him in her life even if he did not love her. I loved how he was with her at the time of her death- that was one of the happiest moments of her life.

Want Marius and Cosette together- I want them together. They are perfect for each other. These two bring hope to the tale. By the end, all they have left is each other. Marius lost Eponine, Enjolras and the rest of his friends and Cosette lost her adopted father. I love the two of them together- I know people say “he should have been with Eponine”- I disagree”. I always wanted him with Cosette- once you understand why a love triangle is set up the way it is- you love it more.

Marius is not a jerk- I HATE it when people call him a jerk. I did explain a lot of why he is not a jerk in an earlier unpopular opinion. He is kind, sweet, awkward and compassionate. If he was a jerk, Eponine and Cosette  NEVER would have fallen in love with him. He ended up fighting at the barricade- that shows an incredible act of bravery. At the beginning of act II, I believe he sent Eponine away with that letter to protect her from the uprising. His best act of compassion was at the time of Eponine’s death- he stayed with her till the end. He truly cared about her- it does show- he was devastated in that scene. He is not a jerk one bit- he is fully aware of Eponine situation- right after she died, he said to the students- “her name was Eponine, her life was cold and dark, yet she was unafraid”. If it wasn’t for Marius, Eponine’s life would not have a source of light period.

Phantom of the Opera Milestone

It’s hard to believe I have loved Phantom of the Opera for five years. It is one of those musicals I have fallen in love with through the songs. My mom recommended the musical to me. I decided to request the musical on Pandora. The moment I heard the songs, I fell in love. I may not have known the plot yet, but I just loved the music. In that moment, I badly wanted to see the stage show. I heard it was coming to the Peace Center in May 2014, and I requested that my mom take me to see it.

When I went to see it with my mom, I was spellbound. I was choked up watching it. I could not take my eyes off of that stage. During the overture, I could not takes off the chandelier. The only time I moved was during the crashing of the chandelier. I fell in love with Christine during this production.

In front of a Phantom of the Opera poster

So now five years later, I still love Phantom of the Opera. It is a hauntingly beautiful musical. I always loved Christine and Raoul together. I always knew that Phantom was too dangerous and destructive for her. Eventually I realized that Raoul would never hurt Christine. Some favorite Phantom of the Opera songs are “All I Ask of You”, “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again”, “Music Of the Night”, “Angel of Music”, “Think of Me”, and “Phantom of the Opera”. Just wanted to say that I have loved Phantom for five years now.

Are you a fan of Phantom of the Opera? If so, why?

Favorite Songs From Phantom of the Opera

Now, I will talk about my favorite songs. I do not think I have a top ten favorite list of Phantom songs. Now here are my favorite Phantom of the Opera songs.

1. Overture- this is the first time I included an overture in the series. Well, it is just the most perfect overture. When I saw the musical at the Peace Center in 2014, the moment the overture started, I just couldn’t take eyes off of that chandelier. It gives you an overall taste of the mood that Phantom of the Opera is: the overture is both haunting and beautiful.

2. Think of Me- such a gorgeous song. That is really why I love this song.

3. Angel of Music – same reason why I love Think of Me.

4. Phantom of the Opera- the reason why I love this song is that you finally get to meet the Phantom. It is just gives you this overall haunting feeling.

5. Music of the Night- this is just a very very beautiful song. This is my favorite song that the Phantom gets to sing.

6. All I Ask of You- just a gorgeous duet between Christine and Raoul. It shows just how much the two of them love each other. It shows that Raoul will protect Christine. It shows just how perfect of a couple the two of them are.

all-i-ask-of-you

7. Masquerade- I love looking at all of the beautiful costumes in this number. It is also a very beautiful number. It seems that a lot of my reasons for loving various numbers is for their beauty.

8. Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again- what I love about this song is both its beauty and the heartbreaking nature behind it. It shows just how much Christine loved her father and that she is still grieving his death.

Most of my favorite songs in Phantom of the Opera are beautiful songs. Of course I love the title songs, which isn’t beautiful, but actually haunting. I love how the musical isn’t fully haunting, but instead hauntingly beautiful.

Contribution Understudies Put to Theatre

I talked about this before, but I feel like understudies keep on being under appreciated. Without them, so many shows would be cancelled. You have to know how to truly respect them and what they are able to bring to their roles. From the years 2014-2017, I have had a lot of understudies and throughout those years, I have truly learned to really respect them. Without them, you know how much trouble theatre would be in? They would be in a lot. Below I will put a list of mine and if I remember anything about them, I will talk about them.

Possible Spoilers:

1. Grace Morgan (Christine)- I don’t fully remember her when I saw Phantom of the Opera. However, I remember getting choked up by this cast. I remember being drawn to Christine so I bet she was really good as Christine.

10354149_10203791645890941_4955988638206113711_n

2. Lisa Karlin (Leading Player)- This was my first time seeing Pippin. She was the true standout in this production. Everything I know about the Leading Player was based off of her portrayal. She was able to hide her evilness around Pippin to make it seem like she was someone he can trust and to do that she was very playful around him. She was quite crafty and in “Magic to Do”, I detected a small hint of evil, and then in “Glory”, she was much more dark and evil. Everything I know about this character is Lisa Karlin. Just by one actress, I know so much about one actress: that is impressive.

3. Sam Lips- due to being so intrigued by Lisa Karlin, I don’t remember a clue about Sam.

4. Adam Bayjou- I literally was in the West End, and I was thinking “wait a minute, I am in the West End about to live my dream and I have a understudy for Jean Valjean”. I was a little bit nervous. Here is how I can say how brilliant he was: I forgot I was watching an understudy: think about that: if you forgot you watched an understudy, that is real talent right there. Below is a picture of me with Adam at Stage Door.

5. Mary Kate Morrissey- When I have an understudy for Elphaba, it can be kind of scary for me because Elphaba is my all-time favorite musical character. She was actually the standby for Elphaba. Mary Kate embodied everything about Elphaba while bringing something new to the character. She made me appreciate a song I always hated, a song that always seemed emotionless to me: “No Good Deed”. She changed her voice to fit the character: act I: her voice was so much more innocent, but in act II, she changed it to be mature.

6. Kaitlyn Frank- I did basically forget about her version of Katherine Plumber. I got so into Joey Barreiro as Jack that I did forget about the other acting. I also got mind-blown with the talent into the dancing. However, I recently saw my original Newsies review and it did say she had incredible chemistry with Joey Barreiro, who played Jack Kelly.

7. Talia Simone Robinson- this was a bit of a coincidence. How is it that my 2nd professional cast of Les Mis did I end up with an understudy? I thought that was the craziest thing, but this time instead of Jean Valjean, my understudy was Eponine. Talia wasn’t the strongest actor in the love triangle: it was Marius instead. However Talia had extremely strong moments as Eponine. She did not start out that strong as Eponine, but she eventually was able to embody the role. She was flirty and playful around Marius. As I recall, I think I heard some tears at the end of “On My Own” and during that song, I got some goosebumps. Than during “A Little Fall of Rain”, each time she tried to move, she barely could showing that she was weak and just getting weaker indicting that she was dying.

So RESPECT the understudies. They have much more talent than you realize. They are able to embody the roles more than you think. Look at all of these understudies. When I saw Lisa, I didn’t even know who the Leading Player was, and Lisa was able to get me so intrigued by that character and usually the first time I discover the antagonist, that usually that doesn’t happen. Then at Mary Kate, she made me appreciate a song I always hated for once. I was able to respect what Talia was able to bring to Eponine even though she didn’t start out that strong; she eventually was able to embody the role. It is not easy to be an understudy: they have to work harder than anybody. You have to be aware how many productions would be cancelled if they didn’t exist. Just appreciate them much more.

Who is Christine?

I really wanted to include Christine on this series. The annoying thing is I barely know who she is, but I will try.

Major Spoilers:

Christine is about 16 years old in Phantom of the Opera. She is a ballet dancer still mourning the death of her father at the beginning of the show. She is being trained by her “angel of music”, who she thinks is being sent by her father. However, she has not idea it is really the Phantom using and manipulating her. Eventually Christine became the star of a show when Carlotta stormed out of the theatre and that is when Raoul recognized Christine. Throughout “Angel of Music”, you meet her best friend, Meg. When the two meet up for the first time, you can tell that they used to be childhood sweethearts at one point in their lifetime. Christine is eventually seduced, manipulated and kidnapped by the Phantom, who she eventually realizes is her “angel of music”.  She is somewhat fascinated by him it seems, but once she sees his deformed, she is terrified of him. Christine has gone through so much and has basically been used by the Phantom.

She confesses her worries and fears to Raoul. This is when their romance truly blossoms. Christine has found someone she can truly trust and knows that he will protect her. She always struggles with the death of her father. Towards the end, she gets kidnapped once again and has a tough decision to make: either stay with the Phantom or have Raoul kidnapped. So here is a 16 girl dealing with the loss of her father and being manipulated and controlled by a mysterious guy: she goes through a lot through the course of the story. The Phantom always wants her to be the star of every show. She recognizes that it is in his soul where his true deformity really is. Christine is a very very hard character to get to know: I almost feel like it is easier to get to know both Raoul and Phantom.

I wish I knew why I love Christine, but I really don’t know why.
