Magic of Disney Couples

There is a wonderful magic in Disney musicals. For the past couple of musical posts, a lot of my ideas seem to come from romance. One of my favorite parts of romance come from Disney couples. Whether that is coming from Nala and Simba, Princess Jasmine and Aladdin, Belle and Beast, and Katherine and Jack, there is something wonderful about Disney couples.

The songs of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”, “A Whole New World”, “Beauty and the Beast”, and “Something to Believe In” has a special kind of magic in them. It is a bit hard to describe the magic, but I think it has something to do with the youthfulness of the couples and the nature of the songs. The couples from Lion King, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast were couples that I grew up with and the couple from Newsies only came from last August.

But still, when you add romance to a Disney musical, a wonderful nature of magic exists. There is something just special about those songs. They are so heartfelt and filled with innocence and joy. The magic in Disney romance is exactly why I love those couples I believe and I also love them due to my emotional connection to the songs and the characters.

What do you think about the Disney couples? What is your favorite Disney couple?

Heartbreaking Love Musical Songs

The musical emotions of love and heartbreak work nicely together. Both translate beautifully. There are musical songs that are heartbreaking love songs. Below I will talk about some heartbreaking love songs.

Possible Spoilers:

I’m Not That Girl- this song started out as sad. I was only in middle school when I first realized the song was sad. By high school, I definitely understood this song was part of a love triangle. I was 100% blind to heartbreak growing up. I honesty did not understand unrequited love in those days. The song, “On My Own”, is a huge reason why I discovered this song was heartbreaking and memorizing the lyrics helped as well. This song doesn’t have room to be fully heartbreaking because literally just moments before Elphaba sang this song, she just found out she loves Fiyero so in many ways this song is moderately heartbreaking.

On My Own- this song is even more heartbreaking than I’m Not That Girl. While both are unrequited love songs, there are obvious differences due to how different Elphaba and Eponine are as characters. Eponine’s story revolves around unrequited love so you know how it affects her unlike Elphaba. Marius is the only person who treats her kindly and that is why she loves him. This song shows just how strong Eponine is and this song is even more powerful and more heartbreaking than “I’m Not That Girl”

This Nearly Was Mine- while this song is not dealing with unrequited love, there are still some similarities. This is sung in South Pacific by Emelie. Nellie has left him due to the race of his children’s mother. So this sung is dealing with a breakup, which has similar emotions in my opinion with unrequited love.

Somewhere- this is the last love song in West Side Story. As the love songs go on in this musical, the songs just get sadder and sadder. This song happens right after the rumble takes place and that is when the first traces of tragedy show up. It is so close to the tragic end of this modern Romeo and Juliet tale.

If I Can’t Love Her/Evermore-I put these two songs together because they are both sung by beast. They both are similar to each other in emotion. Beast has realized that he loves Belle, but doesn’t know if she will ever love him. He cannot be turned back into his human form until he loves someone and he is loved back.

As Long As He Needs Me- I actually did see Oliver in middle school, but do not remember seeing it. The only knowledge I really have belong to the book and the 2005 movie. So it is interesting how I seem to know that this song is a heartbreaking love song, but the same could be said for “If I Can’t Love Her”. But by knowing who Nancy is in the book and that movie, I know this song is heartbreaking. Nancy loves Bill Sikes even though he is abusive towards her, but she will always love him as long as he needs her even though the situation is dangerous

In many ways heartbreak and love really fit nicely together. Even though I heard “If I Can’t Love Her” before “I’m Not That Girl”, “I’m Not That Girl” was really the start to sad love songs. That was because Wicked was the musical where I began to understand the negative emotions and Wicked is the best way I can even remember what the negative emotions were like in my younger years.

However “On My Own” started telling me more about sad love songs. I began to understand that sad love songs are actually heartbreaking. If it wasn’t for “On My Own”, I still would be interpreting sad love songs the same way as  I used to call “I’m Not That Girl”. Calling a song heartbreaking is even more devastating than calling a song sad. Due to that, a heartbreaking love song has more fragility and vulnerability. I cannot think of a single sad love song that is not heartbreaking.

Beauty and the Beast Review

Yesterday, I watched the live action Beauty and the Beast movie. It was fantastic and made me feel like a kid again. It is a musical that I have loved since I was a kid and it is still quite magical.

Everything about this movie was incredible. Emma Watson was a wonderful choice for Belle. I loved how Belle’s story was expanded and how you got to learn what happened to her mother. I love how heroic Belle is when she took her father’s place at the Beast’s castle. She is quite a caring person as well and eventually saw there was more to the Beast than his temper. She is so book-smart and eventually learned to care for and love the Beast. In this movie, Belle was an inventor while her father was an artist.

Even the actor playing the Beast was incredible and you actually got to learn why the Beast was so arrogant and selfish because you learned more about his background. The actors playing Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, and Chip were an incredible part of this movie. They are the main enchanted objects you really got to meet in the castle outside of the Beast.

Boy, Gaston was quite believable. You can really tell just how bad Gaston is.  You can tell when Gaston is spreading lies about Maurice and the Beast. He was actually funny at times and so was his sidekick, LeFou. Josh Gad as LeFou was an incredible companion to Gaston. You can tell that LeFou is almost as bad as Gaston. He always stuck around with Gaston and  always spent time with him.

The animation found in this movie was incredibly wonderful. They did a good job on the different enchanted objects found in the castle. The animation found in “Be Our Guest” was so fun to watch and gave me a lot of excitement. They created really scary wolves and whenever their was wolf attack, I was quite frightened. But I was more fond of the animation found in the enchanted objects.

This movie even did a wonderful job on the costumes. The Beast’s outfit and Belle’s yellow gown were two of the best costumes found in the film. I even loved Belle’s outfit that she wore throughout “Belle” and her outfit in “Something There” . Gaston’s red jacket in “Gaston” was also incredible.

The songs are always something I look forward to in a musical. While it had the usual “Beauty and the Beast”, “Gaston”, “Be Our Guest”, “Something There” and “Belle”, it still had some new editions. I loved Beast’s new song, “Evermore” and I found nothing wrong with it. I loved the singing involved. “Beauty and the Beast” is actually my favorite song from the movie. But “Be Our Guest” was the most funs scene.

Now that I saw the movie, I hope to see the stage musical again.

Musical Characters I Relate to

One unique thing about musicals is that you find characters you can relate to. This post will talk about musical characters I relate to: both stage and nonstage.

First up is Elphaba from Wicked. Out of all musical characters, I relate to her the most. Like me, she is smart, determined, talkative, unique, big-hearted and believes in equality and staying true to herself. Another thing that I relate to her is her friendship with Glinda. Because I relate to her so much, I have the most personal relationship with her and she is my favorite musical character. She is one of the biggest reasons why Wicked has become meaningful.

Next up is Annie from Annie. Just like her, I am optimistic.

I relate to Anna from Frozen. I have a very outgoing personality as well and am funny. Sometimes like Anna, I act before I think. This sounds crazy, but Anna reminds me of Glinda.

I feel like I can relate to Belle from Beauty and the Beast. I love to read especially mysteries, classics, fantasies, and mythology. Just like Belle, I am caring and capable of seeing who someone is beyond what they look like.

There are some characters where I can only relate to a small piece of then. I can relate in some way to Jean Valjean’s strong spirituality. Ever since high school, I have always been known I have a strong spirit.
