The reason why Cast is not one of the Reasons to Convince me to See a Musical

I understand that the cast is one of the reasons that convince people to see a musical. It could be because one of their favorite actors or actresses is in that cast. However, that does not apply to me. Cast is not one of my reasons to convince me to see a musical. Why is that that?

There is a reason why I do not use the cast to convince me. For starters, I discover my hometown’s season in the spring. That is before I know who is going to be in the cast. It is usually in the spring where I start to decide what shows I want to see in the upcoming season. I do understand that there is a number of talented actors and actresses in the United States. Another reason is due to the fact that there is the possibility of getting an understudy.

There are times when I discover who my upcoming cast will be over the summer. Then are times where I do not who is the cast until the day of the show. That is what happens when you rely on tours- at times. Discovering the season in the spring- it does make you begin to make you start deciding on what shows to see- that is before knowing who the cast is. See what I mean? I use other factors to decide if I want to see it- loving it before, if I already love the composers, recommendation from someday else, not remembering the first time, and so on. If it is seeing it again, the important thing is to not compare- to get the most of the cast you are about to see.

  1. This is a good post! While the cast is definitely not the defining factor of what convinces me to go to see a show–like you said, there are understudies and also it may just not be a show I’m interested in. That said, I’m probably more likely to try to go and see a show if some of my favorite actors are in a cast, even if there’s the possibility that I won’t get to see them in the show. When I went to NY to see Les Miz, for example, I was looking forward to seeing my favorite Valjean/Javert duo, but the Javert actor hurt himself and had to end his time with the show early and the Valjean actor had the flu so there was an understudy in for him. Still, I got to see an amazing show and the understudies were amazing! I think that it’s really important, like you said, not to compare performances too much if you can help it because it will impair your enjoyment of the show!

    1. You may not even know who is in the cast until the day you see a show. Understudies are a possibility. There are many things to consider. When I see the upcoming season- I usually already make up my mind about what shows to see, and that is before knowing who is going to be in the cast in the first place.
