Now on to Eponine. Eponine is one of my favorite characters in musical theatre and she is an Eponine that many people are familiar with. My favorite Eponine is Samantha Barks and a big part of that is because she was my first Eponine due to the fact that my journey with Les Mis began with the movie.
Possible Minor or Major spoilers:
Her Eponine showed a lonely version of the character. Eponine after all is all alone in life. She has parents who don’t love her and the ones she loves loves someone else. She is the girl that would do anything for Marius even if he wouldn’t do the same for her. In her tiny bits of dialogue, she was able to show the heartbreak that Eponine was going through. Her “On My Own” was full of heartbreak and loneliness and was able to show just how strong and deep her love for Marius is.
Eponine does disguise herself as a boy to be at the barricade. When noticing that Marius is about to get shot, she takes the shot herself and her wound turns out to be fatal. Samantha was able to show that Eponine was dying at this point in the story. She showed that through her voice by starting out quiet and showed her voice getting weaker and weaker as “A Little Fall of Rain” continued and also was able to use body language to show that Eponine was dying.
Without Samantha’s Eponine, I never would have fallen in love with the character. Since she was so incredible, I was able to develop such a beautiful emotional connection to Eponine. It is interesting how your first actor in a role can make you start to develop opinions about the character and start to understand who the character is. I remember falling in love with Eponine the 2nd time I saw the movie due to Samantha’s version of Eponine, but I honestly had no idea why I loved Eponine at all because I knew I did not relate to the character. Samantha was the beginning of the strong love I have for Eponine.
