Value of Humanity

Human Family

I note the obvious differences
in the human family.
Some of us are serious,
some thrive on comedy.

Some declare their lives are lived
as true profundity,
and others claim they really live
the real reality.

The variety of our skin tones
can confuse, bemuse, delight,
brown and pink and beige and purple,
tan and blue and white.

I’ve sailed upon the seven seas
and stopped in every land,
I’ve seen the wonders of the world
not yet one common man.

I know ten thousand women
called Jane and Mary Jane,
but I’ve not seen any two
who really were the same.

Mirror twins are different
although their features jibe,
and lovers think quite different thoughts
while lying side by side.

We love and lose in China,
we weep on England’s moors,
and laugh and moan in Guinea,
and thrive on Spanish shores.

We seek success in Finland,
are born and die in Maine.
In minor ways we differ,
in major we’re the same.

I note the obvious differences
between each sort and type,
but we are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

We are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

We are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

-Maya Angelou

I discovered this poem yesterday when I watched an Apple AD during the Olympic opening ceremony. This poem truly touched me because it helps explain our species in a beautiful way. We are all the same, but at the same time different. No one is exactly the same and that is what makes this world as diverse as it is. Each person has different beliefs, values, interests, personality traits, etc. But we all have the capacity to show compassion, love, forgiveness. We are all human and we all make mistakes, but we try to learn from them instead of walking away. No one is exactly the same, which is what makes us all unique. If everyone was the same, this world would be boring.

I don’t try to be someone I’m not and always stay true to who I am. I never let my biggest interests slip away from me and just let them get bigger and bigger. We need to remember to not be afraid of who we are and show our true colors. I have not once tried to be someone I am not.

I am a strong spiritual person who is a big fan of musicals. This blog deals with spirituality and musicals. I am finding that by writing about these, I am realizing I know more about each of them then I think I do. I hope you find my blog inspiring!

  1. Thank you! I just love Maya Angelou. We come her to experience differences, yet we are all from Source; therefore, united and the same.
